If you turn your tap off and the water continues to drip out, it is likely your tap washer that is causing the leak. Alternatively, if your water leak is occurring from the tap body or spindle, you are likely looking at an O-ring issue.

The most common kind of leaking tap is caused by a broken washer, which is relatively easy to fix (if you know how) and quite inexpensive. It's now time to get fixing.

Plug the sink

Step one is to always plug your sink before starting. The reason you need to place a plug in your drain is simple - so you don't lose anything down it. There are small parts when you take apart your tap, therefore it is very easy to lose parts down the sink. Putting a plug in the sink stops any parts from getting lost.

Remove the tap button

After you have placed a plug in the sink, you will need to remove the tap button. The tap button is what says 'hot' or 'cold', and is likely located on the top of your tap. Removing this can be tough, so grab a screwdriver if you need a little extra help.

Remove the tap handle

Next, you need to remove the tap handle, so you are closer to getting to the inside of your tap. How this is done will depend on the type of tap you have, but it will likely need to be unscrewed with a spanner or wrench.

Remove the tap skirt or shroud

Following the removal of the tap handle, you will need to remove the tap skirt or shroud (if your tap has one). This is likely made of metal and may be tricky to remove due to any sealant that is present, so grab a pair of pliers or a wrench to assist. If you are worried about scratching your tap, wrap some gaffer tap around it and then a cloth - this should protect the metal from any tools.

Remove the tap body

Now it's time to remove the tap body, which should allow you access to the washer and jumper valve (the main goal!). You will likely need a spanner to help you remove it and make sure you put it in a safe place - you don't want to lose it.

Remove the tap washer and jumper valve

Once all the above parts have been removed, you will hopefully be able to see the tap washer and jumper valve. If you can't see the jumper valve, don't worry - check out the tap body (as it may have gotten stuck in there). As long as you know where it is, that's the main thing.

Whether you can only see the washer or both the washer and jumper valve, they need to be removed - use tweezers or needle-nose pliers, it makes things much easier.

Replace the washer

Take the tap washer and jumper valve you removed in the previous step and head to your local hardware store to replace any broken or worn-out parts. If you are unsure, have a chat with the staff and they should be able to assist. For reference, washers that are found in your home taps are generally 12mm but can be up to 15mm or more in some instances. Also, before you leave, ensure you pick up some sealant to stop future mould buildup if necessary.

Reassemble the tap

Once you have purchased the relevant new parts, place the tap washer and jumper valve back into your tap and put the rest of the pieces back together. Always ensure the washer and jumper valve is in the right spot before you put any other components together, and always follow the washer and jumper valve with the tap body and use a spanner or wrench to tighten it. Make sure you skip the sealant on this step - we need to test the tap before sealing everything back up.

Turn on the water supply

After your tap has been put back together, turn the water supply back on (but ensure your tap is turned off - not too tight though!).

Test your tap

Now it's time to test your tap. Turn it on and see if it is still leaking. If it isn't take the skirt and handle off and place some sealant on the skirt base. If it is still leaking, give your local plumber a call as there may be a bigger problem going on... With these in mind, there are generally two kinds of water damage - ‘sudden and accidental’ damage and ‘gradual’ water damage. In every home, there is clean water and then the waste product of the used clean water is known as wastewater. The plumbing system in a home is split into two main parts, each dealing with either supplying freshwater or disposing of used water. Pumps are often used to ensure that the clean water is pressurised enough to run showers and taps.

Shutoff valves are used to turn on and off the water supply to your home. They are located along the perimeter of your house, on the street side as this is where your house initially is supplied with water. Gas is burnt to directly heat the water, providing quick temperature increases and consistent performance regardless of weather conditions.

Gas heaters are a popular choice for those who need to heat their pool quickly or who live in areas with inconsistent sunlight. However, they typically have higher operational costs compared to solar or heat pump systems due to the cost of gas.

Heat Pump Pool Heating

Heat pump pool heaters offer an energy efficient and often more sustainable alternative to traditional heating methods. Unlike gas heaters that generate heat by burning fuel, heat pumps work by extracting heat from the surrounding air and transferring it to the pool water. This process is similar to how a refrigerator or air conditioner works, but in reverse.

Ground Source Pool Heating

Ground source pool heating, also known as geothermal pool heating, is a highly efficient and environmentally friendly method for heating swimming pools. This system utilises the temperature of the earth to heat the pool water. Pipes are buried underground, either horizontally or vertically, and a circulating fluid absorbs heat from the ground. This heat is then transferred to the pool water via a heat exchanger.

While the initial installation can be more complex and costly than other methods, ground source heating offers exceptional energy efficiency and consistent performance, making it a sustainable and cost effective option in the long run.

In summary, there are various ways to heat your pool, each with its own set of advantages and considerations. While options like solar, and gas offer different benefits, this guide will now focus on the most energy efficient and sustainable choices: heat pump pool heating and ground source pool heating.

These technologies offer significant long term benefits in terms of cost savings and environmental impact, making them impressive options for pool owners seeking both comfort and efficiency.

iStore Heat Pump System

Heat Pump Heating

As previously mentioned, heat pump pool heating stands out as an efficient and sustainable method for maintaining comfortable pool temperatures.

How Do Heat Pump Pool Heaters Work?

The core principle behind heat pump operation is the transfer of heat from one place to another. Unlike traditional heaters that generate heat, heat pumps move existing heat. This process is extremely similar to how a refrigerator keeps food cold, but with the aim of warming water.

1️⃣ Evaporation

The refrigerant within the heat pump absorbs heat from the surrounding air as it passes through the evaporator coil. This causes the refrigerant to change from a liquid to a low pressure gas. The efficiency of this process can be influenced by the ambient air temperature and humidity.

2️⃣ Compression

The low pressure gas is then compressed by a compressor, which dramatically increases its temperature. This heated refrigerant is now ready to transfer its energy.

3️⃣ Condensation

The hot, high pressure refrigerant travels to the condenser coil, where it releases its heat to the pool water flowing through the heat exchanger. As it releases heat, the refrigerant cools and condenses back into a liquid.

4️⃣ Expansion

Finally, the liquid refrigerant passes through an expansion valve, reducing its pressure and temperature, and the cycle begins again.

Advantages of Heat Pump Systems

While energy efficiency is a key benefit, heat pumps offer several other advantages:

🥽 Extended Swimming Season

🥽 Low Operating Costs

🥽 Environmentally Friendly

🥽 Relatively Quiet Operation

🥽 Durable and Long Lifespan

Factors To Consider When Choosing a Heat Pump System

Selecting the right heat pump involves several considerations:

📏 Pool Size: This will determine the capacity of the heat pump that you will need.

🌡️ Desired Temperature: The temperature you wish to run your pool at will affect the heat pump’s workload.

💲 Budget: Whilst the operating costs are lower than other systems, the initial investment can be higher for heat pumps.

⚡ Coefficient of Performance (COP): Look for a heat pump with a high COP as this shows the energy efficiency of the system. A higher COP means more heat output for the energy input.

Installation and Maintenance of Heat Pumps

Proper installation is crucial for optimal heat pump performance. It's recommended to have a qualified professional install your heat pump, ensuring it's correctly sized and integrated with your pool's filtration system. Regular maintenance, such as cleaning the coils and checking refrigerant levels, will help maintain efficiency and prolong the life of your heat pump.

Ground Source Heating

Ground source (or geothermal) pool heating represents a highly efficient and sustainable approach to warming your swimming pool. So let's find out a little bit about flexi hoses! A Flexi hose, short for flexible hose, is a type of plumbing or water transport component that is designed to be flexible and adaptable. Flexible hoses or braided stainless steel water connectors have become very popular within the Australian market replacing copper pipes, and can be installed in kitchens, bathrooms, and toilets. They are made from materials like rubber, stainless steel, or other flexible materials and are often reinforced with braided layers to provide strength and durability. Plumbers generally love working with flexi hoses due to their ease of installation, flexibility, and adaptability to different plumbing configurations. However, it's essential to choose high-quality hoses and replace them periodically to prevent leaks or ruptures, which can lead to water damage and other issues.

Flexi hose applications

These hoses are commonly used in residential and commercial plumbing applications, especially in situations where rigid pipes are impractical due to limited space or the need for flexibility.
